Online Cinema , Tell us which film you chose to watch, and what you thought of it?

Growing Up
Filmmaker: Ronan Kelly
Director of Photography: Tamara Higgs

I chose the film Growing up , firstly because I am particularly interested in documentary style films and social realism films such as This is England (2007,Meadows,UK) and Neds(2011,Mullan,UK). The film presents real social issues like the above films such as the lack of a sufficient father figure leading to a misguided child and youth. Also the techniques used in the film such as the jump cuts at the beginning were effective in presenting Arthurs lack of concentration and hyper activity. The decline in colour saturation as the film progresses is also effective in assisting the films decline in mood form happy to sad.

What has attracted you to BA (Hons) Filmmaking Course?

What has attracted you to BA (Hons) Filmmaking Course?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to attend an open day but I am greatly satisfied by the prospects of studying BA (Hons) Film-making at Manchester Metropolitan.

The main aspect that first appealed to me about the course was the title. The fact that it is a Filmmaking course caught my eye immediately as most other university’s offer only a film and media course. I wanted something that was mainly a practical filmmaking course geared to help me find who I am as a film maker. The other factor that has appealed to me is the fact the course gives me the opportunity to work as an individual artist film maker or undertaking a role in a film production team. I have only ever worked on my own individual films, never as part of a production team. I would embrace the opportunity and enjoy working as part of a production team, as well as finding out my direction as part of the team, whether its cinematography, editor, sound etc.

Another aspect of the course that really appeals to me is the staff. The opportunity to be taught by practicing filmmakers is very appealing to me, but to be taught by filmmakers whose work is broadcast at the highest level by the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV is an unbelievable opportunity. The staff clearly are experienced and knowledgeable in their field which would give me creative confidence, knowledge and enable me to flourish in the world of film. Also the evidence of the great service provided by the staff is reflected on by the high standard of students work , which I have viewed on you online cinema.

I am particularly interested in Documentary film making, as shown in my recent portfolio additions I have started making more documentary style films. The opportunity to develop my filmmaking to a professional standard in documentary, screen drama or artist film (as stated in the 3rd year of the course) is a great prospect. I think the prospect of learning these particular styles by the experienced staff is great and fits right into my style of filmmaking I am already familiar with.

Also as the film industry is one of the most competitive industries in the UK and the world at this present time, I believe that studying at a top university as Manchester Metropolitan will enable me to stand out of the crowd. Not only will this but the learning opportunities also enable me to prepare for the world of work and/or further study. Also the fact that 90%* of art, design and architecture graduates go straight into employment and/or further study presents me with great confidence about the prospects after the course at Manchester metropolitan. This statistic entices me more with the range of opportunity’s surrounding film and media in Manchester, such as the BBC branches recently established in Manchester as well as the many Independent film company’s in and around the city such as thinktank (documentary film production).

Just a simple short clip illusion of someone supposedly getting hit by a bus.  I used after effects to merge two separate clips together using masking tools and key-frame animation to create the effect. Filmed and edited by myself in August 2009. I've included this to show how long I have been making videos and been interested in film making.

Sing for Change 2011

I was asked by the creative art department of my school to create a documentary for the British Arts Council showing the links between schools in Sheffield and Zimbabwe through the Arts. The documentary shows the Sonduza dance theatre’s involvement with the creative and expressive arts department of Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School and the aims of the singing for change project. I was chiefly responsible for the production of the video but was advised by two fellow students on editing and research. I had to work to very strict standards and requirements as well as a tight deadline. The video was given very positive feedback by the project leaders and had been included in the DVD produced by the British Arts Council to be shown in schools in both Sheffield and Zimbabwe.

All Nightmare Long

A short film I created for my AS Film studies coursework in spring 2011. Filmed and edited by myself. The film represents alcohol being the demon inside the male character creating a split personality. The video was mainly aimed to create shock and tension. I aimed to create tension with the deep, slow tempo music alongside the slow paced editing. I also aimed to build up the tension to emphasise the shock I created with the sharp music hits and quick shot changes. I used Adobe after Effects to create the mirror demons, using mask tools, liquefy and colour correction.

Bit Of Grit

Short rock climbing/bouldering video made for some friends. The video shows surrounding area of climbing hot spot Burbage West. The climb entitled "West Side Story" with a difficulty of 7B+ proves to be too challenging for the climbers as they do not succeed in completing the problem. I used a range of camera shots to show different perspectives of the holds and problems,  to document the problem for other climbers. As well as making the video more interesting to watch. I shot in black and white to make the video more exciting than a simple documentation of a bouldering problem.
